Here’s what we know:
- There is no suggestion that gas will be switched off from existing connections to homes. The recently announced ban applies only to new homes requiring a planning permit from 1st Jan 2024.
- The electricity network in Victoria is not ready for full electrification. Currently half of the energy supplied to homes in Victoria is gas and the electricity grid cannot cope with double the current demand any time soon.
- Gas is cleaner than the current alternatives given that Victoria’s electricity generation is currently dominated by brown coal.
